There’s so much to see and do in Snowdonia all year round. From outdoor activities and extreme sports to people-powered rollercoasters and steam trains, it’s impossible to have a boring visit to Snowdonia!
If you’re visiting the region with children during the school holidays this summer, you’ll probably already have a good idea of just how many fun attractions there are to keep them entertained. But did you know that many of Snowdonia’s attractions put on special events for children throughout the summer, too?
Face painting, arts and crafts, drama and singing workshops, teddy bear’s picnics… all this and much more is happening in Snowdonia this summer, so read on for summer family entertainment ideas galore!
This fascinating building on the shores of Y Foryd is an interesting enough attraction as it is. Add drama and singing workshops to the mix, and Fort Belan becomes the place to be this summer for youngsters with dreams of a career in the performing arts.
Penrhyn Castle, Bangor, can always be relied upon to put on great family events during the school holidays, and this summer is no exception! From meeting birds of prey to performances by one of Britain’s leading street and festival theatre companies, Penrhyn Castle is a great day out this summer!
Llanberis Lake Railway
A trip on a steam train is always fun. But add a teddy bear’s picnic to the timetable, and the kids will be beside themselves with glee! That’s what’s on offer at the Llanberis Lake Railway from 27th to 30th July – how many bears will attend?
If your little one’s teddy bear can’t get enough of picnics, fear not – there’s another one, this time at the Talyllyn Railway in Southern Snowdonia, on 20th August. As well as the picnic there will be family-friendly entertainment to make it an even greater day out!
Help your children develop their creative skills this summer, by taking them to any of the wonderful craft workshops organised by Plas Glyn-y-Weddw in Pwllheli. Making small creatures with clay and sticks, mask making, creating dream catchers and puppets – these are just some of the great activities your children could enjoy.
GreenWood Forest Park
It’s been voted the fourth best family attraction in the whole of the UK by TripAdvisor this year, and little wonder – GreenWood Forest Park, near Caernarfon, offers tons of eco-friendly fun for all the family (and we reckon the grown-ups love it just as much as the kids do!) This summer, events and activities include face painting, hair braiding and body art sessions; donkey rides; Harley’s showtime; Crafty Bugwug and Ramshackle’s Fantastical Forest Show. Phew!
Plas yn Rhiw
For budding botanists and TV wildlife programme presenters in the making, a visit to the beautiful gardens at Plas yn Rhiw on the Llyn Peninsula is always a treat. This summer’s special events include a morning of learning about the different varieties of butterfly and moth that make their home in the gardens.
National Slate Museum
The National Slate Museum in Llanberis is one of Snowdonia’s top attractions – and entry is free, which is always welcome if you’re visiting with the family. This summer, the museum is hosting a number of craft workshops where young visitors can get creative with the museum’s “art cart”, decorate pieces of slate or create a slate frame, and much more.
Welsh Highland & Ffestiniog Railways
There are plenty of special events lined up at the Welsh Highland and Ffestiniog Railways this summer. From arts and crafts to fish ‘n’ chips trains, a classic car exhibition and even visits from the pirate Ricardo, it’s non-stop fun on the railway this summer, so pop along with the family and try something different!
