Harlech, a World Heritage site, is probably best known as the home of Harlech Castle. But there’s so much more to Harlech; here are ten things you could see and do there.

The historic town of Harlech on the Gwynedd coast sits on a hillside above its medieval castle, started in 1283 by Edward I during his second Welsh campaign. But it’s not just the history at Harlech that keeps visitors coming back time after time; the beautiful surroundings, the town’s undeniable charm and the very personality of the area make Harlech a must-see when you visit Snowdonia.

Harlech Castle

1. Harlech Castle

Harlech Castle is considered one of the best examples – if not the best – of medieval British defensive architecture, and when you stand at the foot of those mighty walls you’ll understand why. Although it’s an ‘Edwardian’ castle in origin, it’s played its part in many campaigns in subsequent centuries. A long siege during the Wars of the Roses is said to be the origin of the Welsh song “Men of Harlech”.

2. Theatr Harlech

Theatr Harlech is a wonderful venue for all sorts of performances and events, from art exhibitions and plays to workshops and films – and all sorts of unusual things between! In the past, these have included sandcastle building workshops on Harlech beach and Bollywood dance lessons, while 2012 is shaping up to be an interesting year, with events like Planet Abba and a special St David’s Day concert to look forward to.

3. Walking

Set, as it is, among such beautiful countryside, you won’t want to miss the opportunity to do some walking when you visit Harlech. The old Cwm Bychan and Cwm Nantcol drovers’ roads are a great place to start, but in this part of the world there’s so much to explore by foot, you’ll be spoilt for choice. The Rhinogydd mountain range is another walkers’ favourite, and is known as the last true wilderness in Wales – again, easily accessible from Harlech. Find out more at Walk Eryri.

4. Underground exploration

At Llanfair Slate Caverns you can lose a few hours being fascinated by the vast caverns that were worked out of the rock by candlelight alone, over a hundred years ago. The slate in these caverns is among the oldest in the world, and tops the roofs of buildings all over Britain and Ireland. Well worth a visit!

5. Furry friends

If you’re travelling with children, pop along to Children’s Farm Park, which is back above ground by Llanfair Slate Caverns. There’s all sorts of fun here for the young adventurer, from mini tractors and air cannons to crazy golf and nature trails. And of course, lots of baby animals to coo over. The baby goats are always popular, as is bottle feeding the calves and lambs.

Royal St David's

6. A round or two…

Golf is a big deal in Harlech. That’s because the town is home to one of the UK’s top golf courses, Royal St David’s, which draws visitors from all over the world who love to play a round or two in spectacular surroundings, in the shadow of Harlech Castle.

7. The beach

The beach at Harlech is big. Really big. And it’s the sort of beach that’s great for watersports, and exploring, and digging, and walking. And playing hide and seek in the dunes, of course. Don’t wait for the summer; Harlech beach is a joy all year round, so lace up your walking boots and head for the sand!

8. St Tanwg’s church, Llandanwg

If you’re a bit of a history buff, make sure you visit St Tanwg’s church at Llandanwg. Founded in the fifth century, this tiny church nestles in the sand dunes and is said to be one of the earliest Christian foundations in Britain. The present building is medieval, and after a period of neglect it was restored in the 19th century. An ancient gravestone bearing the inscription “Ingenuus” – a contemporary of St Patrick – sits by the altar, while the graveyard holds the remains of Sion Phillips, a contemporary of Shakespeare.

9. Bryn Cader Faner

Bryn Cader Faner is one of the most beautiful Bronze Age sites in Britain. This little cairn is only 8m wide and less than a metre high, but the fifteen slabs that lean outwards like a crown of thorns make it a thing of wonder. The walk to Bryn Cader Faner can be a bit of a challenge, but it’s well worth the effort.

10. Shopping

You won’t find much in the way of high street chains in Harlech – phew! – but you will find plenty of gorgeous independent shops, just the way we like them here in Snowdonia. You’ll be able to shop for excellent local produce, arts and crafts, gifts and interiors; for a special treat pop into Hufenfa’r Castell for some extra-tasty ice cream.

Christmas in Snowdonia is a busy time of year, with all sorts of events organised throughout the region. In addition to the ten we published in November, here’s another ten Snowdonia Christmas events that you won’t want to miss.

If you’ve ever been to Snowdonia at Christmas, you’ll know what a magical place it is. With its snow-capped mountains providing a suitably wintry backdrop to all the festive goings-on, it’s difficult to avoid feeling Christmassy when you visit Snowdonia in December!

Whether you’re visiting alone, as a couple, as a family or in a larger group, it’s easy to find a Christmas event in Snowdonia to suit your tastes and get the Christmas spirit brimming over. Here are ten Christmas events in Snowdonia for 2011 that are suitable for a wide variety of age groups and tastes.

Llechwedd Slate Caverns

1. Santa Trains at Llechwedd

Santa’s on his way to visit Llechwedd Slate Caverns in Blaenau Ffestiniog, where all year round there’s plenty of family fun to be enjoyed. A ride on Santa’s special underground trains in 2011 includes a gift for each child, and a mince pie and glass of punch for adults. Santa trains run between 10am and 4.15pm, on 10th-11th and 17th-24th December 2011 inclusive.

2. Piggery Pottery Christmas Fair

One of Snowdonia’s best loved family attractions, Piggery Pottery is where to go if you fancy having a go at painting pots, pebbles, slate and anything else you can get your hands on! On Sunday 11th December they’re holding their annual Christmas Fair, which will feature a number of stalls selling local produce and gifts, and you can also take advantage of their free “personalise a pot” offer.

Llanberis Lake Railway

3. Santa Trains in Llanberis

Santa’s a busy man in December, so it’s lucky there are so many special trains laid on to help him deliver presents to the children of Snowdonia! Hop aboard the Santa Train at the Llanberis Lake Railway on 10th/11th and 17th/18th December. Children’s gifts are included in the fare, as are mince pies and seasonal drinks for adults.

4. Beer Festival, carols and more

At the Grapes Hotel in Maentwrog, near Blaenau Ffestiniog, there’s so much going on this December, it could fill a separate article! There’s a beer festival to introduce five new never-tasted-before beers from 5th-14th December; carols with Cor Moelwyn (in aid of Hope House Children’s Hospice) on the 9th; a ‘bring your own banjo’ open mic night on the 10th; a knockout darts competition on the 16th, with prizes and free minibus back to Blaenau; and a children’s talent show on the 17th, with prizes, followed by a kids’ disco and karaoke. Phew!

5. Christmas shows and movies

At Galeri in Caernarfon there are several Christmas shows to enjoy this December. Some are through the medium of Welsh – like Jac A’r Goeden Ffa (Jack and the Beanstalk) and Sioe Nadolig CYW (CYW’s Christmas Show) – but there’s also plenty for non-Welsh speakers, like a special Christmas bluegrass concert (Tonic at Christmas) and the latest blockbuster Christmas movie, Arthur Christmas. See the Galeri website for times and prices.

6. Hugh’s Views

There’s a special Christmas coffee morning at the Dragon Theatre, Barmouth, on 12th December. Munch a warm mince pie while you enjoy Hugh Roberts’ fascinating and humorous presentation of old Barmouth photos. Entry is free, and proceeds from tea and coffee sales will go towards the theatre’s running costs (the theatre is a community-run project, and a very worthy cause).

7. Fairbourne Santa Specials

Santa’s special trains are also running in Southern Snowdonia this Christmas, at the Fairbourne Railway, on 17th/18th December. Trains leave Fairbourne at 11.30 and 13.30 each day, taking passengers to see Santa at his grotto at the Harbour View Cafe.

8. Christmas wreath workshop

Learn how to make a natural Christmas wreath in Porthmadog on 11th December with florist Julie Lloyd. The course includes all materials, tea/coffee, and a mince pie. With limited spaces available it’s worth booking early. The course will be held at Pethau Melys at Porthmadog Harbour.

9. Christmas gala concert

On 16th December join the Bangor University Chamber Choir, Bangor University Chorus, the Bangor University Music Society and Bangor University Concert Band for a special evening of Christmas music. Includes congregational carols and a performance of Gerald Finzi’s beautiful Christmas cantata, In Terra Pax.

10. Christmas Ceilidh/barn dance

Join the Mooncoin Ceilidh Band and their caller in a special Christmas barn dance at the Dragon Theatre, Barmouth, on 16th December. Apparently it takes just a few minutes to learn the dances, so even if you’ve never been to a barn dance before you’ll soon pick up the moves. With a mixture of Irish, Scottish, Welsh, English and Appalachian music and a licenced bar, this promises to be a really fun night out!

Dolgellau is a quaint old market town in Southern Snowdonia, in what were once the Celtic tribal lands of the Ordovices. It’s the perfect base for exploring Snowdonia, so here are ten things you could see and do when you visit.

The pretty market town of Dolgellau in Southern Snowdonia is situated at the foot of Cader Idris, one of Snowdonia’s best-loved mountains, and is an excellent base for exploring Snowdonia at any time of year.

Dolgellau’s history is long and extremely interesting (download the ‘sense of place’ PDF for more information), and this is one of the reasons that Dolgellau is such a popular place to visit today. But there’s a lot more to the town and surrounding countryside than ancient history, so here are ten things worth doing and seeing next time you visit Dolgellau.

Cader Idris

1. Cader Idris

There’s an old saying about Cader Idris: if you spend a night on the mountain, when you come down you’ll either be a poet or a madman. The fantastic scenery on the walk up the mountain includes a wonderful lake – Llyn Cau – near the summit, which according to legend is bottomless and home to a monster. Don’t forget your camera; you’ll kick yourself if the monster surfaces and you miss a great photo opportunity!

2. Quaker Heritage Centre

The establishment of the Quaker community in Dolgellau in the 17th century is an important part of Dolgellau’s history. The Quakers, like many minority religious groups at that time, suffered extreme persecution and this led to the emigration of many Quakers to Pennsylvania. You can find out all about the Quakers, their persecution and their escape to America at Dolgellau’s Quaker Heritage Centre.

Coed y Brenin

3. Coed y Brenin

Dolgellau is a popular base for cyclists, because there are many excellent cycling routes nearby. One of the most popular is Coed y Brenin, which boasts a number of excellent mountain biking routes for all abilities. Even if you’re not a keen cyclist, there’s plenty else to do at Coed y Brenin; excellent walking, a high ropes course, a cafe with wonderful views, and a fantastic adventure playground for kids to tire themselves out on.

4. Ty Siamas

Ty Siamas is the National Centre for Welsh Folk Music, and it’s what we like to think of as a museum with a difference. That’s because it’s all so hands-on: you can try out a number of musical instruments, see a real recording studio, shop for all things musical, and even catch a performance or two.

5. King Arthur’s Labyrinth

King Arthur’s Labyrinth is a fun family attraction in Corris, which is close to Dolgellau. This is another of those ‘attractions with a difference’; here, you’ll hear a number of stories about King Arthur, who according to legend had many connections with the Snowdonia region, but you’ll hear them while you take an underground boat ride. This is a very popular attraction, along with Corris Craft Centre which is on the same site but back above ground; it’s worth combining the two attractions for a really fun day out.

Centre for Alternative Technology

6. Centre for Alternative Technology

The Centre for Alternative Technology, or CAT, is at nearby Machynlleth. This is a really fascinating attraction for all the family, where you’ll learn all about sustainable living and clean technology, organic gardening and building an eco-house. Perhaps the most popular thing to do at CAT, though, is riding the water-balanced cliff railway – one of the steepest in the world.

7. Fishing

There’s plenty of good fishing in the Dolgellau area, with several fisheries managed by the Dolgellau Angling Association. There’s all sorts of fishing available in season; you may be lucky enough to catch sea trout, salmon, brown trout or rainbow trout – but even if you don’t, you’ll still catch a nice day out!

8. Steam railways

See the countryside in comfort, without having to keep your eyes on the road, with a fantastic day out on a steam train. The two closest steam railways to Dolgellau are the Fairbourne Steam Railway and the Talyllyn Railway, both of which are within easy reach of Dolgellau and will take you on breathtaking tours of some of Snowdonia’s best scenery.

9. Golf

Dolgellau Golf Club, set among the spectacular scenery that surrounds Dolgellau, is considered by many players to be one of the most beautiful golf courses in Wales. Certainly, positioned as it is beneath Cader Idris, the course is a pretty dramatic one by anyone’s standards; and the views of the Mawddach Estuary from the top six holes are especially breathtaking.

10. Shopping

One of the wonderful things about Dolgellau is the variety of shops. Dolgellau’s shops are mostly small and independent, selling a great selection of outdoor gear, gifts, local produce, textiles and craft supplies. And of course, Dolgellau is still a market town, so look out for the farmers’ market on the third Sunday of each month, and the furniture and household goods auction on the third Thursday of every month. You’re sure to bag a bargain or two!

Snowdonia is a real winter wonderland during November and December. While we can’t promise a nice thick covering of snow, Snowdonia’s festive events will help get you into the Christmas mood.

All year round, there’s something interesting going on in Snowdonia. In every season there’s a huge selection of events to enjoy, from outdoor adventures and family fun to history and the arts.

Christmas is one of the best times to be in Snowdonia, because we really know how to celebrate the season of goodwill in the Snowdonia Mountains and Coast region. Whether you’re a local resident or are visiting Snowdonia for a winter break, you’re sure to find a fun, festive event to get you into the mood for Christmas. Here are ten to get you started.

Glynllifon woodland

1. Iard Christmas Craft Fair

The Christmas events season kicks off with the Iard Christmas Craft Fair at Glynllifon, near Caernarfon, on 19th and 20th November. Glynllifon’s resident artists offer you the opportunity to browse and buy a selection of unique gifts, including jewellery, pottery, metalwork and paintings. Entry and parking are free, and there’s also entertainment, mulled wine and a hog roast.

2. National Slate Museum Winter Fair

The Winter Fair is a special festive fun day for all the family at the National Slate Museum, Llanberis, on 27th November. Make Christmas crafts to take home, enjoy storytelling, face painting and puppet shows. There’s a small extra charge to see Santa in his grotto; he’ll be arriving on a steam engine, UNA, at about 11am, so don’t be late!

3. Nadolig Betws y Coed Christmas

Arguably the most anticipated Christmas event in Snowdonia in 2011, Nadolig Betws y Coed Christmas promises to provide an outstanding weekend of festive cheer. With a lantern procession, a funfair, a real ice rink and late night shopping – not to mention brass bands, falconry, art and craft workshops and live music – the weekend of 2nd to 4th December in Betws y Coed is one you won’t want to miss!

4. Electric Mountain Christmas Fayre

There’s more ice skating – indoors, this time – at the Electric Mountain Christmas Fayre in Llanberis, also on the weekend of 3rd and 4th December. As well as the ‘ice disco’, there will be craft stalls selling local produce, handmade jewellery, henna tattoos, gifts, and much more – and there’s a 10% discount available in the Electric Mountain shop when you spend over £15.

Conwy Castle

5. Conwy Medieval Christmas Parade

On 9th December you can enjoy something a bit different: a medieval Christmas parade through the ancient streets of Conwy. There’ll be minstrels, knights, maidens and revellers, led by Jack Pudding the jester. There’s late night shopping until 8pm too, so you’ll be able to buy a few last minute gifts (there are some wonderful shops in Conwy, so you’re bound to find something really special).

Ghostly boatman

As Halloween closes in, our minds turn to the mythical, the magical, and the mysterious. Here’s a selection of weird and wonderful folk tales from Snowdonia.

Cantre’r Gwaelod

In a region like Snowdonia, where the history stretches back over thousands of years, folk memories of real events often alter a little with each generation, until the original stories are turned into something quite fantastic.

One such example is the legend of Cantre’r Gwaelod – the Lowland Hundred – a mythical sunken kingdom off the coast of Aberdyfi, or thereabouts, in Cardigan Bay.

According to legend, the floodgates were left unattended when their keeper, Seithennyn, had too much to drink and fell asleep. The sea drew in and drowned the kingdom, and all who lived there.

Does this story originate from a folk memory of the changing coastline at the end of the last ice age, handed down through the generations to become a mystical tale of a sunken city whose ghostly warning bells can still be heard out at sea?

The Dyfi Estuary: last resting place of Cantre'r Gwaelod?

Certainly, there is some evidence that there is something out there; the ancient sunken forest under the sea in Cardigan Bay is well documented. However, whether a whole kingdom was ever there remains to be seen.

It’s easy enough to suggest that a real event, like a storm or the end of an ice age, is the source of a folk memory that turned into the legend of Cantre’r Gwaelod. But the origins of some of the other weird and wonderful local legends here in Snowdonia are not so easy to trace. Take the story of the magic hare, for instance…

The magic hare

As everyone knows, witches can turn themselves into animals whenever they like. A witch who lived in Llanfrothen with her grandson, Ifan, certainly possessed this skill.

When Ifan came of age he earned a reputation as a skilled game-beater, and enjoyed plenty of work as a result. Whatever the conditions, no matter how little game seemed to be around, Ifan could always manage to raise something out of the bushes for the local lords to hunt.

But after a while, the hunters started to notice something strange. It seemed that Ifan would regularly raise a very large hare which ran so fast, and was so devious, it was never caught. The hunting lords were convinced it was the same hare every time, and superstitious as people were in those days, witchcraft was suspected.

The local priest, when approached for help by the huntsmen, advised that the only way to catch a magic hare was with a black dog with not a single white hair anywhere on its body. The lords managed to find a dog fitting this description, and the next day Ifan was hired again to flush out game. Before long the hare dashed out and the hunters and their new dog ran off after it. No matter where the hare dodged – under bushes, through ditches – the black dog kept on its tail, and as the hare tired, the dog managed to bite one of its back legs, drawing blood.

The hare, in a panic, changed direction and dashed into Ifan’s grandma’s house. The huntsmen burst in and found the old woman sitting in her chair, panting, with blood trickling from bite marks on her muddy legs. Needless to say, Ifan’s services as a beater were not required again.

Spooky Snowdonia - watch out for the Gwiber!

The Gwiber of Penmachno

The magical creatures of Snowdonia aren’t limited to everyday creatures like hares, of course. The mythical animals are just as fascinating as the real ones. One such creature is the Gwiber, which means Viper in Welsh, but is pretty far removed from any viper you may have seen on a wildlife documentary or in a zoo.

The Gwiber of Penmachno, in the Conwy Valley, was a horrible beast. Descended from a real viper, the Gwiber, if it drank the milk of a woman, could grow much larger and sprout wings. It was somewhere between a dragon and a serpent; call it what you will, but either way it was terrifying!

An outlaw decided it would be a nice achievement if he could kill the Gwiber – something to boast about among his friends – and laughed off the prophesy of a local wizard who warned that by attacking the Gwiber the man would die from a viper’s bite, from breaking his neck, and by drowning. After all, the man thought: who could die three times?

But the prophesy came true when the man tracked the Gwiber to its lair. As the man tried to kill the beast it bit him on the hand. The man, in shock, fell from the rocks, breaking his neck, and then rolled into the river, where he drowned. And thus, the wizard’s prophesy came true.

Snowdonia is a popular holiday destination that boasts many famous visitor attractions. But if you’d like to experience a different side to Snowdonia, try visiting some of its beautiful old villages, like Llanfrothen and Croesor.

Plas Brondanw - the house was built around 1550

Every country in the world has its own well-kept secrets when it comes to places to visit, and Snowdonia is no exception. While guide books tend to point visitors towards popular tourist attractions – the busiest beaches, the best-trodden paths, the places that see thousands of visitors every year – often, the places that local people hold dearest to their hearts are those that are most deserving of inclusion in guide books, but are completely overlooked.

Gardens at Brondanw

The Meirionnydd communities of Llanfrothen and Croesor – they are neighbours to each other, via Garreg – are two such places.

Those people ‘in the know’ – and the majority of these will be local residents – take delight in visiting Llanfrothen and Croesor to enjoy peaceful, unspoilt surroundings where natural beauty is abundant and photo opportunities lurk around every corner.

There’s been a strong community here since medieval times; the age of the local medieval church, St Brothen’s, is testament to this, although according to tradition the site dates back to at least the 6th century. Although the church is now redundant, it’s cared for by Friends of Friendless Churches; so while you won’t catch a service at St Brothen’s these days, you’ll still be able to go inside and have a look around. Much of the fabric of the building dates to the 13th century, but inside you’ll see fixtures and fittings belonging to anywhere from the 15th century to the 19th, when the church underwent significant restoration works.

Details of listed buildings in Llanfrothen, and dendrochronology reports placing the felling dates of timber used in some of these buildings to the 15th century, are further evidence that this delightful little community has withstood the tests of time.

While there are popular tourist attractions nearby – for example, the Glaslyn Osprey Project at nearby Pont Croesor (handily located near the station for a trip on the Welsh Highland Railway), and Portmeirion, just down the road at Minffordd – the real delight in Llanfrothen and Croesor is just being there, soaking up the peaceful atmosphere and beautiful surroundings. The Ring (the local name for the village pub, The Brondanw Arms) is a great place to do this, so pop in for a pint and a meal during your visit; the beer garden is wonderful.

For walkers and outdoor enthusiasts, Croesor has plenty to offer. This tiny village sits at the foot of Cnicht, “The Welsh Matahorn”, and is a great place to start if you’re planning to explore Cnicht and the Moelwyns. En route there’s a community-managed cafe and gallery, Oriel Caffi Croesor, which also provides riverside camping facilities.

If you’re hiking from Croesor, as well as discovering all that unspoilt scenery you’re bound to come across the old mine workings of Croesor Quarry and Rhosydd Quarry. Long since closed down, parts of these quarries are still accessible; we don’t recommend exploring inside the mines, as they can be extremely dangerous, but it is well documented that caving enthusiasts and experienced mine explorers have left behind ropes and other equipment as, despite the danger, the Croesor to Rhosydd Through Trip is infamous in mine exploration circles.

Gardens at Brondanw

Long mountain walks aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, of course, so if you’re visiting Llanfrothen or Croesor and aren’t feeling especially energetic, pay a visit to Plas Brondanw. This was the ancestral home of Portmeirion’s creator, Clough Williams-Ellis, and while the property is less obviously striking than the famous Italianate village, it’s a wonderful place to visit. Beautifully designed and tended formal gardens, with gorgeous topiaries, ponds, statues and follies, are backed by the equally stunning Snowdonia landscape. Here, pristine order meets mountain wilderness, and the results are truly breathtaking. There’s a small charge for visiting Brondanw, which you won’t begrudge paying as the opportunity to visit such a delightful and peaceful place (and this is one of those attractions that is never crowded, although by rights it should be) is worth every penny.

Gardens at Brondanw

You’ll see evidence of Clough Williams-Ellis’ involvement all around in Llanfrothen, Croesor and Garreg; those tell-tale splashes of turquoise paint are indicative of how much property in this area is part of the estate. Just across the way from the entrance to Brondanw is Clough’s lookout tower and again, this and the land in which it sits is “typical Clough”, with natural beauty enhanced, not spoiled, by one man’s artistic and aesthetic vision.

If you’re visiting Snowdonia and want to avoid crowds, and try something decidedly different; if you want to see the real, living, breathing Snowdonia with all its little quirks and customs; there are few places that will offer quite such an opportunity to do so than Llanfrothen and Croesor. When you veer off the beaten track in Snowdonia, who knows what you’ll discover?

Halloween in Snowdonia

For many UK schools, in 2011 the Halloween weekend will come at the end of half term. If you’re going to be in Snowdonia at the end of October with your family, here are a few ideas for having some spooky fun.

It’s that time of year again. The nights are starting to draw in and the clocks will soon turn back an hour; the weather has turned chilly, and the cold night air turns every warm breath into a puff of steam.

Snowdonia in autumn and winter is just as beautiful as it is in the spring and summer, but in a different way. Lush green trees start to lose their leaves, covering the land in a blanket of red, gold and brown. Early morning frost glitters like millions of diamonds on paths and walls. And at this time of year – towards the end of October – spooks and ghouls abound, in time to celebrate Halloween.

If you’re going to be in Snowdonia with your children towards the end of October and would like to keep them entertained with ghoulish goings-on and autumnal adventures, you won’t be disappointed; there’s plenty going on in Snowdonia’s top attractions to keep your little demons occupied throughout the half term week.

Greenwood Forest Park

1. Greenwood Forest Park

At Greenwood Forest Park there’s a whole week of Halloween-themed activities to keep children of all ages happy. Many of these activities are crafty – making masks, witches’ pets, ghosts and even Harry Potter-style broomsticks – but there are several extra-special activities, too. These include spotting Zelda the witch, magic shows, owl walks through the woods, lantern processions, spooky face painting and storytelling.

Even if your little ones don’t feel like taking part in these many wonderful activities and events, there’s not a hope in hell that they’ll be bored… award-winning Greenwood Forest Park is of course one of Snowdonia’s premier family attractions all year round, and with its people-powered rollercoaster and other exciting rides to keep them amused, you’ll have a struggle dragging the kids back home!

Penrhyn Castle

2. Penrhyn Castle

Just outside Bangor is Penrhyn Castle, a magnificent castellated mansion whose oldest parts date back to medieval times with striking Victorian neo-Norman additions. This is another of those Snowdonia attractions that always has plenty going on, but during Halloween week of course the focus will be very much on the spooky and mysterious.

During Halloween week in 2011 – the “Dark Happening season” – expect to be entertained by creepy night time tours, bat walks, ‘wild child’ tours where the darker, smellier side of nature is explored, lantern walks and spooky storytelling. There’s a very full calendar of events at Penrhyn this autumn, so you may find you’re spoilt for choice!

3. National Slate Museum

The National Slate Museum is in Llanberis, one of the most action-packed parts of Snowdonia. During half term week the museum will host special Halloween trails for all the family, plus something special just for the adults – an evening of storytelling, where some of the area’s traditional ghost stories will be told in gruesome detail. This is definitely an adults-only event, and advance booking is essential; call 01286 873707 to reserve your place.

Halloween trains, Talyllyn Railway

4. Halloween steam trains

At least three of Snowdonia’s steam railway routes are putting on special Halloween trains during half term week 2011.

The first – Talyllyn Railway – has organised special events on 27th and 28th October. On these nights there’s a special train ride to the haunted woods at Dolgoch. All children on the train will be given a spooky goodie bag full of activities and treats, and there will be prizes for the best carved pumpkin lanterns. There’s also a three-course Halloween feast for all to enjoy.

The Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways also have a few tricks up their sleeves this Halloween. Choose the Ffestiniog Railway trains from Porthmadog to Tan-y-Bwlch for fun, fireworks, fancy dress and food; the special trains run on the 27th, 28th and 29th October. There’s more of the same on the Welsh Highland Railway from Caernarfon to Waunfawr on the 27th and 28th October, culminating in a ‘fiendish feast’ at the Snowdonia Parc Brewpub.

5. Glasfryn Parc

Last but not least is Glasfryn Parc, one of the Llyn Peninsula‘s top visitor attractions. Glasfryn is hosting a family Halloween party on Sunday 30th October from 4-6pm, where the fun will include fancy dress and goodie bags for the kids, and loads of games, activities and prizes.

There’s a special family ‘bowl and bite’ offer for £10 a head, which includes free entry to the soft play area for your teeny tiny terrors. Advance booking, again, is essential – call 01766 810202 to reserve your place.

Barmouth is a delightful seaside town, set among some of Snowdonia’s prettiest scenery. Here are ten ideas for things to do and see when you visit Barmouth.

The pretty little harbour town of Barmouth has been a popular holiday destination for many years. Set among the beautiful scenery of the Mawddach Estuary and snuggling into Cardigan Bay, Barmouth is a favourite of families, walkers, couples and adventurers – because as our list will show you, in Barmouth there’s literally something for everyone!

Barmouth Harbour

1. Barmouth Harbour

The harbour has to be top of any list of things to in Barmouth, because there’s so much to see and do there. Sunset strolls, fishing, sailing, or simply watching the sea for a glimpse of the Cardigan Bay dolphins… and not forgetting the ‘on the quay‘ attractions of Barmouth Harbour, which brings us nicely on to points 2-5…

2. Ty Gwyn

The oldest of the ‘on the quay’ attractions at Barmouth Harbour, Ty Gwyn was built in 1460 by Gruffydd Fychan, a supporter of the Lancastrian cause during the Wars of the Roses. Jasper Tudor – Earl of Pembroke and uncle of Henry Tudor (the future Henry VII) – lay concealed in Ty Gwyn with his nephew while they plotted against Richard of York. These days, Ty Gwyn houses a fascinating shipwreck museum which includes artefacts from local shipwrecks, recovered by local divers.

3. Sailors’ Institute

The second of Barmouth’s quayside attractions is the Sailors’ Institute, which was built in 1890. The Sailors’ Institute houses a Victorian reading room which is a little like stepping back in time, as it looks much as it would have when it was built. Here you’ll see Victorian pictures, paintings and model ships, and you can still read the daily paper free of charge, like you could when the Institute was founded.

4. Ty Crwn

Ty Crwn – the Round House – is the third quayside attraction at Barmouth. This distinctive round building was built as a lock-up in the 1830s, to keep petty criminals and drunkards off the streets. The two cells – one each for men and women – were last used for their original purpose in 1861; these days you can see displays which give a taste of what life was like as a Victorian prisoner.

5. RNLI Lifeboat Museum

The final ‘on the quay’ attraction at Barmouth is the RNLI Lifeboat Museum. Here you’ll find plenty of information about the work the RNLI does, crew kit and equipment, photographs, and you’ll also be able to inspect the Barmouth lifeboat. There are regular exercises at the Lifeboat Museum, so you’ll have a good opportunity to see the lifeboat being launched.

Barmouth

6. The beach

Barmouth’s beach is huge and sandy. And you don’t have to wait for the summer to visit; all year round it’s a wonderful place to walk and enjoy the glorious scenery of the Mawddach Estuary and Cardigan Bay. A stone’s throw from the beach is some extra fun for younger members of the family: a small funfair, where your little ones can scream themselves hoarse for all the right reasons. Barmouth is the traditional British seaside resort at its best!

7. Fairbourne Steam Railway

Seeing this part of Snowdonia from a steam train is a real must; it’s one of the best ways to appreciate the wonderful scenery without having to worry about keeping your eyes on the road, so leave your car at the hotel for a day and hop on the Fairbourne Steam Railway. When you get to the other end (at Fairbourne, just across the estuary) there’s a gift shop and two licenced cafes, so the fun doesn’t stop when the wheels stop turning!

Theatr Y Ddraig

8. Theatr y Ddraig

Theatr y Ddraig – the Dragon Theatre – is an old chapel that was converted in the post-war years to provide a venue for the local amateur dramatics group to put on shows and concerts for the local community and for visitors. There’s all sorts to see at the theatre; you may find yourself watching a variety show, a concert or a play, or even taking part in a workshop or two.

9. Castell y Bere

There’s not a huge amount of Castell y Bere left these days, but don’t let that stop you visiting; the remaining traces of the mighty medieval castle – once a stronghold of Llywelyn the Great and his descendants – ooze atmosphere and are well worth the trip. You’ll find Castell y Bere between Barmouth and Tywyn. Admission is free, so it’s an inexpensive day out for all the family.

10. Llanfair Slate Caverns

Once you’ve explored the outside of Barmouth, why not try exploring the inside of the nearby countryside? Go underground at Llanfair Slate Caverns and marvel at the vast man-made tunnels and chambers. Dwarfed by the caves, you’ll feel like you’re in Tolkien’s Mines of Moria!

Ty Siamas

With its male voice choirs, harpists, award-winning pop stars and world-famous opera singers, Wales has long been known as the ‘land of song’. We take a look at five of Snowdonia’s most popular music venues.

Making and appreciating music is a huge part of Welsh culture. With centuries-old traditions of harping, singing, poetry and folk music still very much a part of modern Welsh culture – you’ll hear all of these and more at special cultural festivals called ‘Eisteddfodau’ (the plural of ‘Eisteddfod’), held locally and nationally throughout the year in Wales – it’s hardly surprising that Wales has, over the past couple of centuries, earned itself the moniker “the land of song”.

All sorts of music are popular – and created – in Wales. Opera, folk, jazz, rock, and even unique traditional styles of poetry and music like ‘cerdd dafod’ and ‘cerdd dant’ are all as popular as ever in Wales.

In Snowdonia, music is as much a part of everyday life as it is throughout the rest of Wales, and the region has produced musical artistes of worldwide acclaim; the opera star Bryn Terfel, for example, is from the Snowdonia village Pant Glas, near Caernarfon, while celebrated pop songstress Duffy hails from Nefyn on the Llyn Peninsula.

If you’re a music lover and would like to enjoy a concert or two during your visit to Snowdonia, here are five Snowdonia music venues you won’t want to miss.

Ty Siamas

1. Ty Siamas

We’ll start with the ultimate Snowdonia music venue, Ty Siamas in Dolgellau. Ty Siamas is the National Centre for Welsh Folk Music, and as well as providing a venue for Snowdonia’s musicians to perform and for visitors to discover new music, Ty Siamas is a wonderful educational centre where you can learn everything there is to know about Welsh folk music.

At Ty Siamas there’s an excellent interactive exhibition where you can try your hand at playing traditional Welsh musical instruments, a performance auditorium, recording studio, cafe, and a shop packed with musical goodies ranging from sheet music and CDs to musical instruments.

Performances at Ty Siamas in 2011 have included local bands, open mic nights, talent contests and folk dancing; there’s something for everyone at Ty Siamas, so make sure it’s on your Snowdonia to-do list!

Neuadd Dwyfor

2. Neuadd Dwyfor

In Pwllheli is Neuadd Dwyfor, a cinema-cum-theatre-cum-music venue that’s occupied its prime position in the town centre for over a hundred years.

When Neuadd Dwyfor was young, it was Pwllheli’s town hall and a penny would buy you the best view of the town, from atop the building’s roof.

These days, Neuadd Dwyfor is the place to be on the Llyn Peninsula if you want to watch movies, dance performances, plays and of course music concerts.

The programme at Neuadd Dwyfor is extremely varied, and the music season really begins in earnest in the run-up to Christmas, when you’ll be able to feast your ears on all sorts of musical treats.

Caernarfon Marina

3. Galeri

Galeri in Caernarfon is one of Snowdonia’s newest arts centres, occupying a gorgeous spot overlooking Caernarfon Marina and the Menai Strait. There’s an outdoor seating area for warmer evenings, when you could spend the intermission enjoying a stunning Snowdonia sunset with a good cup of coffee or something a little stronger from the Galeri bar.

Like many of Snowdonia’s performance venues, Galeri offers a wide range of arts events all year round. Welsh and English language film, local bands, comedy, art exhibitions and even Christmas markets – there’s always something going on at Galeri to suit all ages and tastes.

Theatr Y Ddraig

4. Theatr y Ddraig

Formerly an English Congregational Chapel, the building that now houses Theatr Y Ddraig in Barmouth was improved and extended in the post-war years by a committee of local amateur dramatics enthusiasts dedicated to finding funding to create a permanent arts venue to be enjoyed by townsfolk and visitors.

These days, Theatr y Ddraig – the Dragon Theatre – is almost entirely self-funded, receiving the occasional small grant from Gwynedd Council and the Barmouth Town Council to help things along.

Performances at Theatr y Ddraig include variety shows, plays, music, dance, workshops – a real mixed bag, with something for everyone.

5. Theatr Harlech

Theatr Harlech, in the shadow of Harlech castle and backing onto the sand dunes at historic Harlech on Cardigan Bay, is another of those wonderful Snowdonia venues that hosts all sorts of performances and arts events all year round. Some of these even take place on the beach; in the past, some of Theatr Harlech’s most popular events have been sand sculpture workshops and sandcastle competitions.

In October 2011, look out for two very special live music events at Theatr Harlech: a concert night featuring Cor Meibion Ardudwy (the Ardudwy Male Voice Choir) and the Harlech Silver band, and later in the month a performance of Madam Butterfly by the Mid Wales Opera.

What is it about Snowdonia that inspires such beautiful arts and crafts? Dramatic landscape, equally dramatic history, abundant natural resources and talented makers all have their part to play.

There’s something about Snowdonia that inspires artists and craftspeople.

Perhaps it’s the landscape: looming, heather-clad mountains easing down into gentle grassy slopes, before tiptoeing down into the sea.

Or perhaps it’s the history, often turbulent but leaving behind heroes, villains and monuments to times gone past.

It might even be the wealth of natural resources that are abundant in Snowdonia, many of which are perfect materials for arts and crafts: slate, granite, wool, wood, shells, and even Welsh gold.

It’s a winning combination of inspiration, materials and raw talent that makes Snowdonia such a wonderful place to shop for arts and crafts. It would be fair to say that every town in Snowdonia has at least one shop selling the wares of local artists and craftspeople, but it would be impossible to list them all – so here are ten of our favourites.

1. Alison Bradley Gallery

In the heart of Betws y Coed, the Gateway to Snowdonia, you’ll find Alison Bradley Gallery. Worked in oil paint and charcoal, Alison’s pieces are inspired by rural life and the landscape and coastline of Snowdonia and North Wales. Alison also sells prints of her works, and provides an on-site framing service so her pieces are ready to hang when you get them home.

2. Piggery Pottery

At Cwm y Glo, just outside Llanberis, is Piggery Pottery, who specialise in children’s pottery including night lights and money boxes. You can buy the finished pottery items from the Piggery Pottery online shop as well as in person, but you can also give your children a real treat by taking them into the barn to paint their own designs on piggy banks, pebbles and even jewellery.

3. Corris Craft Centre

At Corris Craft Centre there are nine craft workshops, making and selling a fantastic variety of goods, including jewellery, candles and traditional wooden toys. You’ll be able to watch the craftspeople at work, before shopping until dropping!

4. Inigo Jones Slate Works

You’ll find Inigo Jones Slate Works at Y Groeslon, just outside Caernarfon. Inigo Jones have been making things from slate for 150 years, and over the years the business has expanded from making writing slates for schools to making all sorts of slate gifts and things for the home. As well as visiting the shop, you can take a self-guided tour of the workshops, try your hand at calligraphy and engrave a piece of slate to take home with you.

5. Glynllifon Workshops

Glynllifon’s workshops and shops are packed with beautiful locally-made arts and crafts including jewellery, ceramics, glassware, wood, photography and slate gifts. You’ll be able to meet many of the makers whose goods are sold at Glynllifon, and as an added bonus there are beautiful gardens and woodlands to explore once you’ve finished shopping.

6. The Glassblobbery

At The Glassblobbery, which is about 7 miles from Bala heading towards Corwen, David and Wendy Pryce-Jones make and sell exquisite gifts from glass, which they create freehand using the lamp work or bench glass blowing technique. They make everything from cats and dragons to birds and flowers, in coloured and clear glass.

Trefriw Woollen Mills

7. Trefriw Woollen Mills

At Trefriw Woollen Mills in the Conwy Valley, you’ll have the opportunity to see the machines used for weaving the traditional Welsh bedspreads, blankets, tweeds and dozens of other woollen items that are sold in the on-site shop. So as well as having a great day’s shopping, you’ll learn something too!

8. Harbour Crafts, Barmouth

You’ll find all sorts on sale at Harbour Crafts in Barmouth. From popular gift ranges like Lilliput Lane and Beatrix Potter to St Just jewellery and Portmeirion Pottery, there’s something for everyone in this little Aladdin’s den! The shop is in the old town, near the harbour, so once you’ve finished shopping why not explore the town and make a day of it?

Portmeirion Village

9. Rob Piercy Gallery

In 2002 Rob Piercy became Welsh Artist of the Year, and is recognised as one of the UK’s premier painters of mountains. Pop into the Rob Piercy Gallery in Porthmadog to treat yourself to one of his wonderful watercolours of Snowdonia; his paintings of Portmeirion are especially delightful and really capture the beauty of the famous Italianate village.

10. Tonnau Gallery

‘Tonnau’ means ‘waves’, so it won’t come as much of a surprise that the Tonnau Gallery in Pwllheli describes itself as a ‘sea gallery’! The gallery sells art and crafts on a good mixture of themes, though – it’s not all nautical. When you visit Tonnau Gallery you’ll see works by many of Wales’ most promising artists and craftspeople, so if you’re looking for a future heirloom and have a good eye, it’s really worth a visit!
